Chipped Granite Worktop: Repair Options and What to Expect

Granite worktops are among the most durable kitchen surfaces available — but they’re not chip-proof. Corners and edges are particularly vulnerable, and a chip from a dropped pan or heavy object can leave a visible scar in what is otherwise a flawless surface. The good news is that granite chip repair is a well-established process that can produce excellent results.

Why Granite Chips

Granite is very hard (Mohs 6–7) and highly resistant to scratching, but its hardness also makes it somewhat brittle when subject to sharp impact. Thin sections — particularly at corners, edges, and around sink cut-outs — are most vulnerable. A heavy pan, a tin of food, or a dropped cast iron cookware item landing on a corner can chip the stone.

Can Chipped Granite Be Repaired?

Yes — in most cases. Professional granite chip repair involves:

  • Cleaning and preparing the damaged area
  • Filling the chip with a colour-matched epoxy or polyester resin that bonds to the stone
  • Introducing small stone flecks or pigment to match the pattern of the granite
  • Sanding and polishing flush with the surrounding surface

On dark granites (black, dark grey, blue pearl), repairs blend very well and are often nearly invisible. On lighter or more heavily patterned granites, more skill is required to match the pattern, but good results are still achievable. Edge and corner chips — the most common type — are typically the most successful repairs.

What About Large Chips or Missing Sections?

Where a significant section of stone is missing — typically at a corner — the same repair process applies but requires more material and careful pattern matching. If the missing piece is still intact, it can sometimes be reattached with epoxy adhesive and the seam polished to reduce visibility.

How Much Does Granite Chip Repair Cost?

A professional granite chip repair typically costs between £90 and £250 depending on the size of the chip, complexity of the pattern matching, and your location. This compares very favourably with the cost of replacing a granite worktop section — typically £300–£800+ including templating, supply and fitting.
