Ceramic wall tiles are one of the most common surfaces in UK bathrooms and kitchens — and chipped, cracked and damaged tiles are one of the most frequent surface repair requests we receive. Whether it’s a single chip on a prominent bathroom tile or multiple cracked tiles around the bath, understanding your repair options helps you make the right decision.
What Causes Ceramic Wall Tile Damage?
Ceramic wall tiles are susceptible to a specific set of damage types: impact chips from bottles, taps, fixtures and fittings falling against the tile surface; stress cracks from building movement, particularly in newer builds or around structural openings; thermal cracks from steam, heat and temperature cycling — common around shower areas and behind hobs; damage during installation of mirrors, towel rails, toilet roll holders and other fixtures that go through tiles; and cracking caused by inadequate adhesive coverage leaving tiles unsupported.
Chipped Bathroom Wall Tiles
A chip in a ceramic wall tile — particularly one at eye level, near a window or light source, or on a prominent tile in the centre of a run — can be very distracting. The repair process uses specialist ceramic filler, mixed to the exact colour of your tile using pigments, applied to the chip, shaped and cured, then finished to match the surrounding glaze using polishing compounds. On plain, semi-plain and lightly textured tiles, results are excellent — the repair is invisible at normal viewing distance. On strongly patterned or highly textured tiles, perfect invisibility is harder to achieve, but even on these the repair will always look better than the chip.
Cracked Bathroom Wall Tiles
A crack in a wall tile differs from a chip in important ways. A crack extends across the tile face and potentially through the tile body. If the crack is superficial — a hairline crack in the glaze only — it can be filled and blended. If the tile has cracked through its body, it needs to be assessed carefully. A cracked tile in a wet area (shower, bath surround) can allow water to penetrate behind the tiling, potentially causing adhesive failure, mould and structural damage to the wall behind. In these cases, replacement of the tile is often the right answer — though finding a matching tile in a discontinued range can be a significant challenge, making repair the only practical option.
The Discontinued Tile Problem
One of the most frequent reasons customers call us for tile repair rather than replacement is that their tiles are no longer available. Tile ranges come and go — a bathroom tiled just ten years ago may have tiles that are completely unavailable today. Surface repair is the only option that allows the damaged tile to be restored in situ, without the need to find matching tiles or re-tile the entire area.
