Granite is one of the hardest natural stones used in kitchen worktops, but it can scratch — particularly from abrasive cleaning products, metal utensils dragged across the surface, or grit trapped under cutting boards. Whether a scratched granite worktop can be repaired depends on the depth and extent of the scratching.
Surface Scratches vs Deep Scratches
Surface Scratches
Fine scratches in the polished surface layer are common and visible as dull, lighter lines against the polished finish. These affect only the surface sealer or polish, not the stone itself. They can often be addressed through re-polishing and re-sealing — the surface is buffed to remove the scratch and the sealer is reapplied. This is the most achievable outcome for granite scratch repair.
Deep Scratches
Deep scratches that penetrate into the stone body itself are harder to address. The stone cannot be filled in the same way as a chip — filling a scratch with coloured epoxy typically produces a visible line rather than a restoration. The most effective approach for deep scratches is progressive diamond polishing — grinding down the stone surface to below the scratch depth and re-polishing. This requires specialist equipment and experience.
What About White Marks on Granite?
White marks on granite are often limescale deposits rather than scratches. These respond to appropriate acid cleaning and do not require surface repair. Before attempting any repair, it’s worth cleaning the area to confirm the mark is genuinely a scratch and not a deposit.
