Bathroom Sink vs Kitchen Sink Repair: Are They Repaired Differently?

A question we regularly receive: is repairing a bathroom sink or basin different from repairing a kitchen sink? The answer is yes — not because the fundamental repair process is different, but because bathroom and kitchen sinks are typically made from different materials and encounter different damage types. This guide explains the differences and what to expect from repair on each.

Bathroom Sinks and Basins

Bathroom basins in UK homes are most commonly made from:

  • Vitreous china / ceramic — the most common material; durable, heavy, white or coloured glaze over clay body. Chips expose the darker clay beneath and are visually stark.
  • Resin composite — lighter than ceramic, common in modern bathrooms; chip repair is achievable with composite repair compounds.
  • Acrylic — lightweight, less common for standalone basins; similar repair to acrylic baths.
  • Stone — natural stone basins (marble, granite, limestone) are premium products requiring specialist stone repair.

Bathroom basin chips are typically caused by: items dropped from the shelf above, makeup or grooming products, heavy taps being handled forcefully, or installation damage.

Kitchen Sinks

Kitchen sinks in UK homes are most commonly:

  • Stainless steel — the most common type; surface scratches and dents rather than chips. Surface refinishing can address scratches.
  • Granite composite (Silgranit, Fragranite) — chips from dropped heavy items; composite repair with colour-matching required.
  • Ceramic / fireclay — Belfast sinks and similar; chips expose the body beneath the glaze. High-quality ceramic repair needed.
  • Resin/acrylic — common in budget kitchens; chip repair similar to acrylic baths.

Kitchen sinks face harder use — heavier items, more impacts, more chemical exposure from cleaning products — so damage patterns differ from bathroom basins.

The Repair Process

The fundamental repair process — clean, prepare, fill, colour-match, finish — is the same for both. The difference is in the materials used and the specific colour-matching required. White ceramic bathroom basin repair and white fireclay kitchen sink repair both require white ceramic chip repair compound, but the exact shade of white, the glaze texture and the finish level may differ between products.
