Acrylic baths are the most common type in UK homes today — lightweight, warm to the touch, and available in a wide range of shapes. They’re also more prone to surface scratching than older enamel or cast iron baths. The good news is that acrylic, being a solid plastic material, can often be polished to remove minor scratches — and professional repair can address deeper damage.
Why Acrylic Baths Scratch
Acrylic is softer than vitreous enamel. Abrasive cleaning products, scouring pads, bath toys with rough edges, and even some bath mat suction cups can leave marks in the surface. The finish is typically gloss, and scratches are most visible in bright light at an angle.
Fine Scratches: Polishing
Very fine surface scratches in acrylic can sometimes be polished out using an automotive or plastic polish (such as T-Cut) applied with a soft cloth in circular motions. This works by gently abrading the surface around the scratch to even it out, then buffing to restore the gloss.
Results depend on how deep the scratches are and how evenly the polishing is done. An uneven sheen (where polished areas differ slightly from the surrounding surface) can be more visible than the original scratch — so proceed carefully and test in an inconspicuous spot first.
Deeper Scratches: Professional Repair
Scratches that catch a fingernail are too deep to polish out and need professional attention. A surface repair technician can:
- Sand the damaged area with progressively finer abrasives to remove the scratch
- Polish and buff to restore the gloss level to match the surrounding surface
- For colour damage or deep gouges: apply a colour-matched acrylic filler and refinish
The result is a bath surface that looks consistent and scratch-free. On white acrylic, professional repair is typically very difficult to detect.
What About Chips in Acrylic Baths?
Chips — where a piece of material is actually missing — are more straightforward than scratches for professional repair. A colour-matched acrylic or polyester filler is used to rebuild the surface, which is then sanded flush and polished to gloss. Most chip repairs on white acrylic baths are effectively invisible.
