Acrylic baths are the most common type of bath installed in UK homes — lightweight, warm to the touch, and available in a huge range of sizes and shapes. But acrylic is also relatively soft compared to enamel or stone resin, making it susceptible to chips, cracks, scratches and surface dullness. Shazam Repairs carries out professional acrylic bath repair on-site, restoring damaged baths without the disruption and expense of replacement.
Common Acrylic Bath Damage
- Chips — from hard objects dropped into the bath; acrylic chips more easily than enamel but is also more straightforward to repair
- Cracks — stress cracks from flexing (acrylic baths require proper support underneath; inadequate support leads to cracking over time), or impact cracks from heavy objects
- Scratches — from abrasive cleaners, nail scissors or dragged objects; the soft surface marks more easily than harder materials
- Dullness and yellowing — acrylic can yellow and lose its gloss over time, particularly in hard-water areas or with prolonged chemical cleaner use
- Hairline crazing — fine surface cracks forming a network, usually from UV exposure or very hot water over many years
Acrylic Bath Chip Repair
Acrylic chip repair uses colour-matched two-part repair compounds designed to bond to acrylic and flex with the bath. The repair is cured, sanded and polished to match the surrounding surface. When done correctly, the repair is very difficult to detect under normal lighting.
Acrylic Bath Crack Repair
Cracks in acrylic baths need to be addressed differently from chips. The crack must first be stabilised to prevent it extending — this typically involves drilling a small stop-hole at the crack terminus before filling. We also assess whether the crack is related to inadequate support underneath the bath, and will advise if additional support is needed to prevent re-cracking.
When Replacement Is the Better Answer
We’ll always give an honest assessment. A bath with widespread crazing, deep through-cracks across the base, or severe structural failure is better replaced. For localised damage — a chip here, a crack there — repair is almost always the right choice.
