Vinyl and LVT Floor Repair: Chips, Tears and Lifting Edges

Vinyl and luxury vinyl tile (LVT) flooring are among the most popular floor coverings in UK homes and commercial properties. Durable, waterproof and easy to install, they are particularly common in kitchens, bathrooms, hallways and rental properties. But they are not damage-proof: chips and gouges from dropped objects, tears from heavy furniture dragging, and lifting edges and seams are common issues. This guide explains what’s repairable in vinyl and LVT floors and what the process involves.

LVT Chip and Gouge Repair

Chips and gouges in LVT planks and tiles — from dropped kitchen knives, tools, heavy appliances or furniture legs — are repaired using colour-matched hard wax or vinyl repair compound. The process:

  • The chip or gouge is cleaned and prepared
  • Matching filler (wax or compound) is selected or mixed to match the specific colour and pattern of the LVT
  • Filler is applied in layers, built up to the surface level of the surrounding floor
  • The repair is pared and polished flush
  • For planks with a wood grain or stone pattern, the pattern is replicated in the repair using specialist tools

Results are very good for solid and near-solid colour LVT. Wood grain and stone texture pattern matching is more challenging but achievable by an experienced technician. The repair is virtually invisible under normal lighting conditions.

Tear and Cut Repair in Vinyl Sheet Flooring

Sheet vinyl flooring can be torn, cut or punctured. Repair options include:

  • Small tears and punctures — can be filled with colour-matched seam sealer or vinyl repair compound; the repair is typically very inconspicuous in patterned vinyl
  • Larger tears — where the vinyl has separated significantly, the edges are re-adhered and the gap is filled; alternatively, a section of matching vinyl is inserted as a patch using a seam welder
  • Burns — burnt sections of vinyl are cut out and patched with matching material if available; where no matching material is available, colour-matched filling is the alternative

Lifting Edges and Seams

Lifting edges and seams in LVT — where planks or tiles have lifted from the substrate at their edges — are repaired by injecting appropriate adhesive beneath the lifted section, pressing firmly back into contact with the substrate and weighting or clamping until the adhesive sets. The key to a durable repair is ensuring the substrate is clean, dry and free of old adhesive residue before the re-adhering adhesive is applied.

When Individual Plank or Tile Replacement Is Better

For click-lock LVT installations, an individual damaged plank or tile can often be replaced without disturbing surrounding flooring — a significant advantage over glue-down systems. Where a chip or damage is very large, replacement of the affected plank may give a cleaner result than filling, particularly if matching planks are available.
