Stone resin shower trays — often called “stone” or “mineral cast” trays — have become the go-to choice for quality bathroom fits over the past decade. They feel solid underfoot, resist flexing, and have a premium appearance. But they can chip, and when they do, professional repair is a much better option than replacement. Here’s everything you need to know about stone resin shower tray chip repair.
What Is Stone Resin?
Stone resin (also called mineral cast or acrystone) is a composite material made from natural stone aggregate — usually crushed limestone or quartz — bonded with resin. The result is a dense, heavy tray that behaves more like solid stone than a lightweight acrylic tray. Popular brands include Kaldewei Conoflat, Merlyn Level 25, and Aqualux.
How Stone Resin Trays Chip
Despite their density, stone resin trays can chip from:
- Dropping heavy showerhead components or fittings into the tray
- Dragging a heavy shower door frame across the tray edge during installation
- Impact from bathroom accessories or bottles dropped from shelf height
- Edge damage during tray installation or removal
The Repair Process
Stone resin chip repair involves cleaning and preparing the damaged area, applying a compatible stone composite filler compound, shaping the repair to match the surrounding profile, and sanding and polishing to restore the surface finish. The material’s solid colour (typically white, grey, slate or black) makes colour matching very achievable, particularly on white or light-grey trays.
Can All Stone Resin Chips Be Repaired?
Most chips in stone resin trays can be repaired to an excellent standard. Very large chips at the tray edge — particularly on low-profile slimline trays — may be more challenging but are still typically within scope. Our technicians will assess the damage and advise honestly before any work begins.
