Corian is one of the most repairable worktop materials available — one of the defining advantages of solid surface over stone. Made from acrylic polymer and natural minerals, Corian is consistent in composition throughout its depth, which means scratches, chips, and even burns can be addressed through sanding and refinishing in a way that simply isn’t possible with surface-coated materials. This guide covers everything you need to know about Corian repair.
Why Corian Is Uniquely Repairable
Unlike stone (which has a surface polish over its natural composition) or laminate (which is a surface layer over MDF), Corian is the same material all the way through. This means that scratches, which only affect the surface layer, can literally be sanded away and the surface re-polished to its original finish. Chips and deeper damage can be filled with Corian-compatible repair compound or, in some cases, with offcuts of the same material, then sanded flush and polished.
What Types of Damage Can Be Repaired?
- Scratches — the most common damage; in most cases completely removable by sanding
- Chips and impact damage — filled with matching compound and refinished
- Burns from hot pans — Corian can be damaged by direct heat; burn marks are typically repairable by sanding
- Stains — deep stains that haven’t responded to cleaning can sometimes be sanded out
- Seam repairs — Corian seams that have opened or cracked can be re-bonded and refinished
The Corian Repair Process
For scratches and surface damage, the process involves abrasively treating the area with progressively finer abrasives to remove the damage, then re-polishing to restore the original surface finish. The key is feathering the treatment area to avoid a visible patch — which requires skill and experience with the material.
Corian vs Other Solid Surfaces
Corian is the DuPont-branded original solid surface material; other brands include Hi-Macs, Staron, Meganite, and Avonite. All are broadly similar in composition and all are repairable using the same techniques. If you’re unsure of your exact solid surface brand, our technicians can assess and advise.
