Hob Cutout Chip Repair: The Most Common Kitchen Worktop Damage

Of all the surface damage we repair, chips around hob cutouts are by far the most common. Virtually every stone or engineered worktop with an inset hob is at risk — and the damage typically occurs either during installation or from the repeated thermal cycling that the stone around the hob experiences over years of cooking.

Why Hob Cutouts Chip So Readily

The area of stone immediately around a hob cutout is under multiple forms of stress:

  • Thin cross-section — the stone is thinner around the cut edge than in the main slab, providing less support
  • Thermal cycling — repeated heating and cooling from hob use causes micro-expansion and contraction in the stone
  • Installation stress — the hob cutout is often the riskiest stage of a worktop installation; the saw creates vibration that can cause chips
  • Dropped utensils — the area around the hob is where most cooking activity happens and therefore where items are most likely to be dropped

What Hob Cutout Chips Typically Look Like

Hob cutout chips most commonly appear as small to medium triangular or irregular chips at the corners or edges of the cutout aperture. In quartz worktops, the chip typically removes a fragment of the surface, revealing the grey or white resin substrate beneath. In granite, the chip may reveal pale mineral crystals against a darker surface.

The Repair Process for Hob Cutout Chips

Hob cutout chip repair follows the same process as any other worktop chip — cleaning the area, colour-matching the repair compound, applying in layers, curing, and finishing. The one additional consideration is heat: the area around the hob will continue to experience thermal cycling after repair. We use heat-stable repair compounds in hob cutout areas to ensure the repair remains intact under normal cooking conditions.

How Visible Is a Repaired Hob Cutout Chip?

In the majority of cases, a repaired hob cutout chip is very difficult to see once the hob is back in position. Because the hob frame overlaps the cutout edge, minor imperfections at the very edge of the repair are often hidden by the hob trim itself — making this one of the most forgiving repairs for a very good aesthetic outcome.
