Worktop upstands and splashbacks — the vertical strips that run along the back and sides of a kitchen worktop — are often made from the same material as the main worktop surface. Chips, cracks and adhesive failures in upstands are common and can be repaired to match the worktop below.
What Are Upstands and Splashbacks?
Upstands are vertical strips of worktop material (typically 100–150mm tall) that run along the back and side walls, bridging the gap between the worktop and the wall. They protect the wall from splashes and moisture. Full-height splashbacks may run from worktop level to the underside of wall units. Both can be made from granite, quartz, Corian or laminate to match the main worktop.
Common Upstand Damage
- Corner chips at external corners — particularly where upstands meet at 90°
- Top edge chips along the upstand rim
- Adhesive joint cracking where upstand meets worktop or wall
- Impact damage from pots, pans and small appliances
- Discolouration from heat near the hob
Colour Matching Upstand Repairs
Because upstands are the same material as the worktop, any repair needs to match both the worktop colour and pattern — and be consistent under different lighting conditions. Our colour-matching process accounts for the angle of the surface and the specific sheen level of the upstand versus the main worktop surface (which is often different, as upstands are frequently left with a less polished finish).
Adhesive Joint Cracking
Upstands and splashbacks are bonded to the wall with silicone or epoxy adhesive. Over time, thermal movement, moisture ingress or poor initial adhesion can cause cracking along the joint. We can repair crack damage in the upstand itself, though joint resealing may also be needed.
