Undermount sinks are a popular choice in modern kitchens — they sit beneath the worktop with the rim bonded to the underside of the stone, creating a clean, seamless look. But this installation method creates an internal aperture in the worktop that’s vulnerable to chipping, particularly in quartz and granite. Here’s what you need to know about repairing damage around undermount sink cutouts.
Why Undermount Sink Edges Chip
The internal cutout for an undermount sink creates an unsupported edge that can chip during installation, from impacts during washing up, or from the weight and vibration of heavy pots. The back edge — closest to the tap — receives the most water exposure and mechanical impact, making it the most common chip location.
Types of Damage Around Undermount Cutouts
- Corner chips at the internal corners of the aperture
- Edge chips along the front or back rim inside the cutout
- Stress cracks extending from the corners into the worktop
- Surface chips on the visible underside rim (visible when looking into the sink)
Repair Process for Undermount Cutout Chips
Repairing chips around an undermount sink requires working around the sink structure — often without removing the sink itself. Our technicians use flexible-reach tools to access the cutout area, apply a colour-matched two-part epoxy compound, level the fill and polish to blend with the surrounding surface. In most cases the sink does not need to be removed and the repair is completed in 1–2 hours.
Can All Undermount Cutout Chips Be Repaired?
Most chips and corner damage around undermount cutouts can be repaired effectively. The main limitations are very large pieces of missing stone (over 15mm in any dimension) or cracks that extend significantly into the worktop body. We’ll assess and advise during your initial enquiry.
