Quartz worktop seams — the joins between two pieces of stone — are among the most common sources of repair enquiries we receive. Whether the seam has cracked, lifted, opened up or was simply never finished to a high standard, professional seam repair can dramatically improve the appearance and integrity of the joint. This guide explains what’s involved.
Why Quartz Worktop Seams Fail
A seam between two pieces of quartz worktop is a bonded joint, typically filled with colour-matched adhesive and polished flush. Seams can fail for several reasons:
- Poor original installation — insufficient substrate support, inadequate adhesive fill or incorrect colour match
- Movement in the cabinet structure beneath — particularly in new builds where timber framing settles
- Thermal cycling — repeated heat and cold causing expansion and contraction stress
- Impact near the seam — a heavy blow near the joint can crack the adhesive fill
Types of Seam Defect
Open or Cracked Seams
A gap has opened between the two pieces of stone. This allows moisture, food debris and bacteria to enter, making the seam unhygienic. Repair involves cleaning out the joint, re-filling with colour-matched adhesive and polishing flush.
Lifted Seams
One piece of the worktop is slightly higher than the other, creating a lip or step. This is usually a substrate/installation issue and may require re-levelling the cabinet beneath before the seam can be properly repaired.
Discoloured Seam Fill
The adhesive fill in an existing seam has yellowed, discoloured or never matched the stone colour correctly. This is a cosmetic repair — removing and replacing the existing fill with a better-matched compound.
