Engineered wood flooring is one of the most popular floor types in UK homes — it combines the look and feel of real hardwood with better dimensional stability. But it is not immune to damage. What Is Engineered Wood Flooring?
Engineered wood consists of a real hardwood veneer (typically 2–6mm thick) bonded to a plywood or HDF core. The veneer is finished with lacquer, oil or wax to protect the surface. This means repairs must address both the wood veneer and the finish — simply filling a dent won’t restore the surface gloss or oiled texture.
Types of Damage We Repair
- Surface scratches — light scratches through the finish layer, which can often be polished out or touched up
- Deep scratches — cutting into the wood veneer, requiring fill, stain and finish matching
- Dents and gouges — compression damage or material loss from impact, filled with a colour-matched wood filler then refinished
- Water damage — localised swelling or raised grain from water ingress, stabilised and resurfaced
- Edge chips — where planks have chipped at joins or thresholds
Can All Engineered Wood Floors Be Repaired?
Most engineered wood floors can be repaired — but the thickness of the veneer matters. Thicker veneers (4mm+) can also be sanded locally if needed. Thinner veneers (2mm) require more careful fill-and-finish work to avoid going through to the ply core. We assess the floor type before recommending the repair approach.
Finish Matching
Whether your floor has a lacquered, oiled or waxed finish affects the repair approach and the final result. Oiled floors are generally more forgiving to repair as the oil finish blends at the edges.
