Granite worktops are prized for their hardness and natural beauty — but they are not indestructible. Granite can and does chip, most often at corners, edges and around sink cutouts. The good news is that chipped granite is very repairable by a skilled technician, and the results can be excellent.
Why Does Granite Chip?
Despite being one of the hardest natural stones, granite is brittle. A sharp impact — a dropped pot, a heavy pan hitting a corner, or a tool striking the edge during installation — can fracture the crystalline structure and knock out a chip. The edges and corners of the slab are the most vulnerable points because they have the least mass to absorb impact energy.
How We Repair Granite Chips
Granite chip repair involves carefully cleaning the damaged area, then applying a colour-matched epoxy or resin compound that bonds to the stone surface. The repair material is built up in layers to restore the original profile, then sanded and polished to match the finish of the surrounding granite.
For granite, colour matching can be complex — natural stone has inherent variation in pattern and mineral content. Our technicians use a wide range of pigments to blend as closely as possible to the specific stone. On complex patterns, the repair is visible on close inspection but unremarkable from a normal viewing distance.
Edge and Corner Chip Repair
Edge and corner chips are the most common granite repairs we carry out. The repaired section is built up to restore the sharp or bevelled edge profile, then polished to match the level of sheen on the rest of the worktop. A well-executed edge repair is barely noticeable.
What About Granite Cracks?
Cracks in granite are a more significant issue than chips. A hairline surface crack can often be filled and stabilised. A crack that goes all the way through the slab — particularly across a structural span or near the sink — may indicate that the piece is compromised. We can assess on site and advise on the best course of action.
