One of the most common worktop repair requests we receive is for chips and damage around the sink cutout — the hole cut into the worktop to accommodate the sink. This area is particularly vulnerable to damage for a number of structural and practical reasons, and it’s an excellent candidate for on-site repair.
Why the Sink Cutout Area Gets Damaged
- Thinnest point in the worktop — the material around the cutout edge is the narrowest cross-section in the slab, making it structurally weaker than the open surface
- Water exposure — constant moisture around the sink area can weaken adhesive bonds and seals, allowing water ingress that degrades the material beneath
- Impact concentration — pots, pans and items dropped into or near the sink are more likely to hit this vulnerable edge
- Installation damage — the cutout is made during installation and a less-than-perfect cut, or handling during fitting, can leave micro-fractures that develop into visible chips later
- Undermount sink movement — undermount sinks that are not fully supported can place stress on the surrounding material
Types of Sink Cutout Damage We Repair
- Chips and splinters from the edge of the cutout
- Cracks radiating out from corners of the cutout
- Flaking or delamination around the edge
- Water staining or discolouration at the sink-worktop junction
- Damage where the undermount sink seal has failed and allowed water ingress
How We Repair Sink Cutout Chips
We fill and colour-match chip damage to the cutout edge using specialist resins matched to your worktop material and colour. For quartz, granite, Corian, laminate and composite materials we carry a wide range of colour formulations and can achieve excellent results on most damage types.
Where a crack is present, we assess whether it is stable or progressive. Stable cracks can be filled and sealed. Cracks that are widening or that go all the way through the material may indicate a structural issue that needs further investigation.
Can Sink Cutout Chips Be Prevented?
Keeping the sink area well sealed and dry, using a good quality undermount sink bracket, and avoiding dropping heavy objects into the sink will all help. If you notice a small chip or crack forming, repair it early — small chips that are left untreated often grow.
