Porcelain worktops and large-format porcelain slabs have become an increasingly popular choice for contemporary kitchens and bathrooms. Ultra-thin porcelain panels in dramatic large formats — sometimes called sintered porcelain or large-format porcelain tiles — offer a striking look but present unique repair challenges. Shazam Repairs carries out professional porcelain worktop repair for chips and edge damage.
Large-Format Porcelain: What Makes It Different
Large-format porcelain worktops are typically 6–12mm thick ceramic slabs, sometimes used as a veneer bonded to a substrate. Their key characteristics for repair purposes:
- Extreme surface hardness — porcelain is harder than quartz and granite; scratching the surface in normal use is very unlikely
- Brittleness — despite the hardness, porcelain is brittle and will chip sharply when subjected to edge impact
- Thin profiles — 6mm porcelain has a very thin edge that is particularly vulnerable; thicker 12mm profiles are more robust at edges
- Through-body colour on some products — some large-format porcelain has the same colour throughout the thickness, aiding repair; others have a surface design printed onto a different-coloured body
Common Porcelain Worktop Damage
- Corner and edge chips from impact at worktop height
- Chips at sink and hob cutouts during installation or use
- Hairline cracks from impact or substrate movement
- Chips sustained during fitting or material handling
Porcelain Worktop Repair: What’s Achievable
Localised chips on porcelain worktops can be repaired using specialist ceramic repair compounds. The key challenge is that porcelain’s extremely smooth, dense surface is demanding for adhesion and the surface sheen is difficult to reproduce exactly. For complex surface designs (marble-effect, concrete-effect patterns), the colour and pattern matching adds further complexity.
We’ll always give an honest assessment of what’s achievable on porcelain before beginning any repair — some situations, particularly fine decorative patterns or very thin slabs with through-cracks, may be better addressed by panel replacement.
