A chip in a bathroom basin is one of those damage types that catches the eye every single time you use the sink. It’s often a small repair in practical terms, but highly visible — and left unaddressed, the exposed substrate can stain, rust or harbour bacteria. Shazam Repairs carries out professional bathroom basin chip repair across ceramic, vitreous china, composite and mineral resin basins.
Types of Basin and How They Chip
Ceramic and vitreous china basins
The most common material for UK bathroom basins. Vitreous china is extremely hard but brittle — a dropped tap fitting, heavy bottle or sharp impact will chip the glaze cleanly away. The chip usually reveals a grey or white ceramic body beneath the glazed surface. These chips are typically very repairable with specialist enamel repair compounds.
Composite and mineral resin basins
Stone-effect and matte composite basins have become increasingly popular. These chip differently — often a more irregular break — but the homogeneous nature of many composite materials (same colour throughout) makes for highly repairable results when the right materials are used.
Undermount basins
Undermount basins fitted below a stone worktop are particularly vulnerable at the rim — the unsupported edge below the countertop is exposed to impact from items dropped into the basin.
Basin Chip Repair Process
- Clean and degrease the damaged area
- Key the surface if required for adhesion
- Apply colour-matched repair compound in layers
- Cure, sand and polish to blend with the surrounding surface
- Apply protective topcoat appropriate for wet environment
Colour Matching White and Off-White Basins
Most basins are white — but “white” varies enormously between manufacturers. Bright white, soft white, ivory, almond and pure white are all different. Using the wrong white produces a repair that’s more visible than the original chip. Our technicians carry a range of white pigments and mix to match the specific basin tone on-site.
