The undermount sink installation — where the sink sits below the level of the worktop and is secured from underneath — is the most popular premium kitchen sink configuration. It creates a clean, seamless worktop surface with no exposed rim. But this configuration also creates a specific and common vulnerability: chipping and cracking at the cutout edge of the worktop, directly above the sink.
Why Does the Undermount Cutout Chip?
The inside edge of the undermount cutout is a thin, unsupported section of worktop material. It is exposed to: water splashing from the sink; cleaning products applied directly at the sink edge; heavy items (pans, bottles, the sink itself during installation) placed or dropped against it; and repeated contact from hands and utensils working at the sink. All of these factors make it the most chip-prone edge on the entire worktop.
Can the Cutout Edge Be Repaired?
Yes — in most cases. The cutout edge can be repaired using colour-matched stone repair compound for quartz, granite and marble worktops. The chip is filled, shaped and polished to blend with the surrounding material. The result is significantly better than living with a visible chip and far more affordable than worktop replacement.
What About the Sink Itself?
Ceramic, fireclay and composite sinks used in undermount installations can also chip — from dropped items and from the very hard contact between items and the sink bowl. We repair undermount sinks as well as the worktop cutout, and can address both in a single visit if both are damaged.
