Composite worktops — blended from stone aggregate, quartz particles, acrylic resins or other materials depending on the brand — are a popular mid-market alternative to solid stone. While they are durable and low-maintenance, they are not immune to chips, scratches and edge damage. Professional repair restores the surface without replacement.
What Is a Composite Worktop?
The term “composite” covers a range of products. At the high end, engineered quartz worktops (Silestone, Caesarstone, Compac) contain 90%+ natural quartz in a polymer resin binder — these are highly durable and repair well. At the mid-market, acrylic-heavy composites and budget stone-effect products contain a lower stone content and more polymer — these are easier to damage but also somewhat easier to repair invisibly. Below these sit laminate worktops (Formica, Duropal, Wilsonart) which are composite in a different sense — a printed laminate surface bonded to a chipboard substrate.
Types of Composite Worktop Damage
Edge Chips
The most common damage type. Edges chip from pans, pots, hard utensils, tool impacts during installation and from items being placed forcefully on the edge. Chip repair uses colour-matched compound blended to the specific colour and pattern of the worktop.
Surface Scratches
Composite worktops with a polished finish can show scratching from sharp utensils and abrasive cleaning pads. Light scratching can often be polished out on quartz; deeper scratches require filling. Matt and textured finishes are more forgiving.
Burns
Composite worktops can scorch from hot pans and oven trays placed directly on the surface. Burn damage varies from light discolouration to deeper structural damage. Lighter burns can be addressed with specialist compounds; deeper burns may leave a larger visible repair zone.
Cracks
Cracks in composite worktops usually occur from point loading (sitting or standing on the worktop), inadequate support beneath, or thermal shock. Hairline cracks can be injected and filled; through-cracks require assessment to determine whether repair or section replacement is more appropriate.
