One of the most common questions we receive is: “How long will the repair last?” It is a completely reasonable question and an important one before committing to repair rather than replacement. The honest answer is that a professional repair, correctly carried out on a suitable surface, should last for many years — and in many cases indefinitely.
What Determines How Long a Repair Lasts?
Material Type
Harder materials (quartz, granite, solid stone) generally give the most durable repair results. The surrounding material is strong and stable, and the repair compound bonds well within the cavity. Softer materials (acrylic baths, composite worktops with high polymer content, painted surfaces) can still be repaired effectively but may show wear over longer periods in high-use areas.
Repair Quality
A professionally applied repair using high-quality specialist compounds will outlast a DIY repair kit by years. The key factors are: proper surface preparation, use of the right adhesive and filler chemistry for the material, correct colour matching, and appropriate surface finishing (polish, satin or matt as required).
Location of the Damage
A chip in the corner of a kitchen worktop that receives frequent impact and cleaning chemical exposure will experience more stress than a chip on a bathroom window sill. Repairs in high-use, high-impact locations may show wear sooner than those in lower-stress positions.
Use and Care
Repaired surfaces should be treated with the same care as the original. Using chopping boards, avoiding harsh abrasive cleaners and not placing very hot pans directly on worktops all extend the life of both the surface and the repair.
Expected Durability by Surface Type
- Quartz and granite worktops — repairs are typically permanent when correctly applied to sound material
- Ceramic and porcelain tiles — chip repairs are durable and long-lasting; impact can rechip a repaired area as with the original
- Acrylic baths — repairs last well with careful use; avoid harsh chemicals and abrasive cleaners
- Enamel baths — repairs are durable; enamel re-chipping in the same area is uncommon when repair compound is correctly applied
- Corian and solid surface — repairs are essentially invisible and permanent as the material can be sanded and re-polished
- LVT and vinyl floors — repairs are durable for light foot traffic; high-impact areas may require care
Does the Repair Come with a Guarantee?
We stand behind our workmanship. Where a repair fails due to a problem with application rather than subsequent misuse or impact, we will revisit and re-repair. We discuss expectations honestly before starting any repair so you understand the likely outcome and duration.
