Solid hardwood and engineered wood floors are a significant investment, and damage — whether from furniture, pets, dropped items or general wear — is an inevitable part of their life. Professional hardwood floor repair addresses localised damage without the disruption and cost of sanding the entire floor.
Common Types of Hardwood Floor Damage
- Deep scratches — through the lacquer or oil finish and into the wood itself
- Dents and compressions — from furniture feet, dropped items or heel strikes
- Gouges — deeper cuts or tears in the wood surface
- Board gaps — gaps between boards from shrinkage or seasonal movement
- Water staining — black or dark staining from moisture penetration
- Burn marks — from fireplace embers, cigarettes or hot items
- Worn finish — the protective lacquer or oil worn through in high-traffic areas
Spot Repair vs Full Sanding
Full floor sanding restores the entire floor surface and is appropriate when damage is widespread across a large area. But for localised damage — a single gouge, a patch of deep scratches, a few dented boards — professional spot repair is far more cost-effective and causes no disruption to the rest of the floor. The key is matching the wood colour, grain and finish of the repaired area to the surrounding boards.
Colour Matching Hardwood Floors
Hardwood floor repair requires careful colour matching because wood tones vary significantly — not just between species (oak vs walnut vs iroko) but within species depending on age, stain colour and UV exposure. Our technicians use flexible wood fillers, stains and finish coats to achieve a match that blends with the surrounding floor under normal lighting conditions.
Engineered Wood Floor Repair
Engineered wood floors are repaired using the same techniques as solid wood, with the important caveat that engineered boards have a relatively thin wear layer — typically 3–6mm — compared to solid wood boards of 18–20mm. This means there is limited scope for sanding back deep damage on engineered wood, and filler-based repair is often the most practical approach.
