Sink Chip Repair: Ceramic, Fireclay, Composite and Stainless Steel Kitchen Sinks

Chipped kitchen sinks are one of the most common enquiries we receive at Shazam Repairs. Whether it’s a Belfast-style fireclay sink, a ceramic undermount, a composite granite bowl or a stainless steel sink with a dent or scratch, professional repair can resolve the damage at a fraction of the cost of sink replacement — which typically also involves replumbing, worktop modification and significant disruption. Here’s a guide to sink chip repair by material type.

Fireclay and Ceramic Belfast Sink Repair

Belfast sinks and farmhouse sinks made from fireclay or ceramic are extremely popular in UK kitchens, but their vitreous enamel-over-clay construction is vulnerable to chips — particularly at the rim and at the basin corners. The heavy weight of the sink, and the intensity of daily use (pots, pans, heavy casseroles), means chips are common.

Fireclay chip repair uses colour-matched epoxy compounds to fill and restore the chipped area. White fireclay chips repair very well — white on white matching is relatively straightforward. Coloured fireclay sinks (cream, blue-grey, aged linen) present more colour matching complexity but are still repairable.

Composite Granite Sink Repair

Composite granite sinks — Blanco SILGRANIT, Schock Cristadur, Reginox Cristalite — are repaired with colour-matched composite filler compounds. Chips at the rim are most common. The key challenge is matching the specific colour of the composite, which varies widely across the available colour ranges. See our dedicated guides to Blanco, Schock and Reginox sink repair for more detail.

Stainless Steel Sink Repair

Stainless steel sinks don’t chip in the traditional sense, but they can develop dents, deep scratches, surface corrosion (rust spots), and discolouration from harsh cleaning chemicals. Deep dents in stainless steel sinks can sometimes be reduced by specialist metalwork; surface scratches can be re-grained to blend with the surrounding surface. Rust spots in stainless steel sinks are typically caused by metallic residue from steel wool or steel utensils, and can often be treated with specialist stainless steel cleaners before professional attention is needed.

Undermount and Overmount Sink Considerations

Undermount sinks — where the sink is fitted below the worktop level — present additional considerations for repair. The underside of the worktop at the cutout is visible, and any chip at the worktop-sink junction needs to address both surfaces. Overmount (inset) sinks are simpler as the rim covers the cutout edge.
