Kitchen Worktop Edge Repair: Bullnose, Ogee, Waterfall and Eased Edge Profiles

Kitchen worktop edge chips are often more noticeable than surface damage — the edge is at eye level and gets knocked constantly. Different edge profiles present different repair challenges, and the success of a repair depends significantly on the edge profile, the material, and the complexity of the design. Here’s a guide to kitchen worktop edge chip repair by profile type.

Common Worktop Edge Profiles

Square/Flat Edge

The simplest edge profile — a clean 90° angle with a slight chamfer to prevent the sharpest corner. Square edges are most common on laminate worktops. Edge chips on square profiles are relatively straightforward to repair because the geometry is simple.

Eased Edge (10mm Radius)

The most common profile on quartz and granite worktops in the UK — a gently rounded top edge that’s comfortable to touch and resistant to chipping. Eased edge chips expose the substrate at the rounded portion. These repairs require careful shaping of the repair compound to maintain the correct radius.

Pencil Round / Bullnose

A more pronounced rounded edge — from a tight pencil round to a full bullnose where the edge is a semicircle. Bullnose edges chip less frequently than eased edges, but when they do, the repair must maintain the curved profile. This requires skilled application and shaping of the repair compound.

Ogee

The ogee profile features an S-curve that adds decorative character but significantly increases the complexity of edge repair. Matching an ogee profile in repair compound requires skill and the right tooling. Results are typically very good for plain quartz or granite, but more variable on complex natural stone patterns.

Waterfall / Mitre

Waterfall edges — where the worktop material flows vertically down the cabinet side — are increasingly popular in modern kitchens. The mitre joint where the horizontal worktop meets the vertical panel is a potential weak point and can chip. Mitre chip repairs are technically demanding but achievable.

Which Materials Repair Best at the Edge?

Quartz and granite edge chips repair well on plain and subtly patterned designs. Complex veined designs are harder to match. Corian and solid surface repair very well and are virtually invisible on plain colours. Laminate edge chips can be repaired but results are more variable on wood-grain and stone-effect patterns. Ceramic tile edge chips repair well on plain colours.
