Quartz worktops are marketed as non-porous and stain-resistant — and they largely are. But “stain-resistant” isn’t “stain-proof”, and certain staining agents, if left long enough or applied in the right conditions, can penetrate or discolour the quartz surface. This guide explains what causes staining on quartz, what can be removed with cleaning, and when professional repair is needed.
Why Quartz Stains
Engineered quartz is approximately 90% natural quartz stone bound with polymer resin. The resin component, while non-porous, can be affected by certain chemicals and highly pigmented substances — particularly when exposure is prolonged:
- Bleach and strong chemicals — bleach-based cleaners can bleach the pigment in the resin binder, causing permanent discolouration
- Cooking oil residue — oils left to sit can penetrate surface micro-scratches and cause darkening
- Coffee, wine, turmeric — highly pigmented liquids left to dry on the surface can cause staining
- Rust — iron-based rust stains from damp metal objects
- Permanent marker or ink — can temporarily or permanently mark the surface
Can Quartz Stains Be Cleaned?
Many surface stains on quartz can be removed with the right cleaning approach:
- Mild dish soap and warm water for everyday stains
- Isopropyl alcohol (rubbing alcohol) for tougher stains and residue
- Specialist quartz cleaner for persistent marks
- A plastic scraper for dried-on residue
Avoid bleach, strong acids, or abrasive pads — these can cause further surface damage.
When Is Professional Repair Needed for Quartz Staining?
Where staining has penetrated the surface or where bleach has permanently discoloured the quartz, cleaning won’t restore the surface. In these cases, professional surface repair — filling, refinishing and colour-matching the discoloured area — may be the best option short of full section replacement.
Very large areas of chemical discolouration may be beyond economical repair — this is something to assess case by case with photographs.
