LVT and Vinyl Floor Repair: Fixing Chips, Tears and Damage Without Full Replacement

Luxury vinyl tile (LVT) and sheet vinyl flooring are popular choices for kitchens, bathrooms and hallways — durable, waterproof and affordable. But they can suffer chips, cuts, tears and burn marks that leave unsightly damage. This guide explains when vinyl and LVT floor damage can be repaired professionally and when replacement is necessary.

Common Types of Vinyl and LVT Floor Damage

  • Chips and gouges — from dropped heavy or sharp objects
  • Cuts and tears — from sharp items dragged across the floor
  • Burn marks — from hot items like cigarettes, irons or dropped cookware
  • Lifting or bubbling — usually an adhesion or subfloor moisture issue rather than surface damage
  • Fading — gradual colour change from UV exposure particularly near windows

Can Vinyl and LVT Floors Be Repaired?

Yes — chips, gouges and burn marks on vinyl and LVT floors can be repaired professionally. The process involves cleaning and preparing the damaged area, applying specialist filler material, colour-matching to the existing floor pattern and colour, and applying a clear protective topcoat. On patterned floors, the repair also involves replicating the pattern detail — a skilled technician with the right tools can achieve very effective results.

The repair is most effective on smaller, localised damage. Very large damaged areas may be better addressed by replacing individual planks or tiles (for click-together LVT) or sections of sheet vinyl.

Glued-Down vs Click-Together LVT

Click-together (floating) LVT allows individual planks or tiles to be replaced relatively easily, making replacement of a badly damaged section practical. Glued-down LVT is much harder to replace without disruption to surrounding tiles, making in-situ repair the preferred option for localised damage.

When to Repair vs Replace

  • Small to medium localised damage → professional repair
  • Click-together LVT with one or two damaged planks → replacement may be practical if matching stock is available
  • Glued-down LVT with localised damage → repair is almost always better
  • Extensive damage or end-of-life flooring → full replacement
