Enamel over steel (and cast iron) baths are among the most durable bathroom products ever made — many still in service were manufactured decades ago and remain structurally sound. The weak point is the vitreous enamel coating: once chipped or cracked, the exposed steel beneath begins to rust, and the damage spreads. Professional enamel bath repair addresses chips, rust patches and larger damaged areas — often extending the serviceable life of a bath by many years.
Understanding Enamel Over Steel Baths
Traditional vitreous enamel baths are made in two main ways: enamel fused onto pressed steel (the most common modern type, from brands like Kaldewei, Bette, Roca) or enamel fused onto cast iron (the classic Victorian and Edwardian roll-top or slipper bath). In both cases, the enamel is a glass coating fused at very high temperature — it is extremely hard and scratch-resistant when intact, but brittle on impact.
The key difference from acrylic baths is that enamel is a thin glass layer over metal — it cannot flex, so impact that would dent an acrylic bath instead chips the enamel. Once chipped, the exposed steel or iron beneath begins to oxidise (rust) within days in a wet bathroom environment.
Types of Enamel Bath Damage We Repair
Chip Repair
A fresh chip — where the exposed metal is still bright without significant rust — is the most straightforward repair. Colour-matched specialist enamel repair materials fill the chip and are finished to be flush with the surrounding surface. Small chips are often virtually invisible after professional repair.
Rust Repair
A chip left unrepaired leads to rust spread — the corrosion undercuts the surrounding enamel and the damaged area grows. Rust repair involves treating and stabilising the rust, removing loose enamel, cleaning back to sound metal, and applying colour-matched materials to fill and surface the area. Larger rust patches can also be repaired but results are more visible — the earlier a chip is treated, the better the outcome.
Scratch Repair
Deep scratches in enamel that have penetrated through to the steel layer can be addressed with the same fill-and-finish process as chips. Surface scratches that have not penetrated the enamel layer are less critical but can be minimised with careful polishing compounds.
Full Surface Refinishing
For a steel or cast iron bath with extensive chip and rust damage, full surface refinishing applies a new coating across the entire bath surface. This is more involved than spot repair but delivers a near-new appearance and is significantly cheaper than bath replacement — particularly for antique cast iron roll-top baths where replacement would require sourcing a compatible piece.
Famous Enamel Bath Brands We Repair
We repair enamel over steel baths from Kaldewei, Bette, Roca, Duravit (steel enamel models), Villeroy & Boch, and older heritage cast iron baths. We also repair enamel over steel shower trays from the same brands.
