Acrylic bathroom wall panels — used as an alternative to tiles in showers, wet rooms and around baths — have grown enormously in popularity over the last decade. Their seamless, grout-free surface, ease of installation and wide range of finishes make them an attractive choice. But acrylic panels can scratch, chip at edges, crack from impact, and develop surface damage from abrasive cleaning. Professional surface repair can address most types of panel damage effectively.
Common Types of Shower Panel Damage
- Surface scratches — from cleaning with abrasive cloths or scouring pads, which are particularly damaging to gloss acrylic finishes; scratched acrylic appears hazy or matt in the damaged area
- Edge chips — the cut edges of acrylic panels, particularly at corners and where panels meet, are vulnerable to chipping under impact
- Impact cracks — falls in the shower or significant impacts against the panel can cause cracks in the acrylic
- Drill damage — if shelving, grab rails or other fixings have been drilled through the panel, the surrounding area can crack or the damage can be left exposed when fittings are removed
- Discolouration and staining — limescale, soap scum and some cleaning products can leave marks and dull areas on acrylic panels
Scratch Repair on Acrylic Panels
Surface scratches in acrylic panels can be polished out using acrylic-specific scratch removers and polishing compounds, provided the scratches are confined to the surface and have not cut deeply through the material. The process involves progressively finer abrasives to remove the scratches, followed by a polishing compound to restore the original gloss level. This is most effective on plain gloss and satin finishes; textured or printed wood and stone effect panels present greater complexity as the pattern in the print layer may be disrupted.
Chip and Crack Repair
Chips and cracks in acrylic shower panels require colour-matched repair compounds appropriate for acrylic, followed by careful feathering and polishing to blend the repair into the surrounding panel. Plain white and pale colour panels are most effectively repaired; strongly patterned printed panels (marble effect, stone effect) present greater colour-matching challenges but a skilled technician can still achieve a significant improvement.
When Panel Replacement Is Necessary
Extensive scratching across the full face of a panel, or damage that has compromised the waterproofing function of the panel (through-cracks at joints or around fixings), may require panel replacement rather than surface repair. A transparent assessment of what is and is not repairable — with honest advice where replacement is genuinely the better option — is the mark of a reputable surface repair company.
