Bath Resurfacing vs Bath Repair: What’s the Difference and Which Do You Need?

“Bath resurfacing” and “bath repair” are terms often used interchangeably in the UK — but they describe quite different processes. Understanding the distinction helps you choose the right solution for your bath and avoid paying for a more extensive treatment than you actually need.

What Is Bath Resurfacing?

Bath resurfacing (also called bath re-enamelling or bath spray painting) involves applying a new coating over the entire surface of a bath. The existing surface is prepared — cleaned, abraded and primed — and then a new topcoat is sprayed over the whole bath, giving it a fresh, like-new appearance.

Resurfacing is appropriate when a bath is generally worn — dull, stained, scratched across most of the surface, or you want to change the colour. It’s a full cosmetic restoration.

What Is Bath Chip Repair?

Bath chip repair targets specific, localised damage — a chip, crack, scratch or stain in one area of the bath. The damaged area is filled, shaped, sanded and colour-matched so the repair blends invisibly with the surrounding surface. The rest of the bath is untouched.

Chip repair is appropriate when the bath is in good overall condition but has localised damage. It costs significantly less than resurfacing and is completed much more quickly — typically in under two hours.

Which Do You Need?

  • Single chip or crack, bath otherwise fine → chip repair
  • Multiple chips across the surface → chip repair (each chip individually), or resurfacing if the bath is extensively damaged
  • Bath surface dull, scratched all over, or stained throughout → resurfacing
  • Want to change the colour of the bath → resurfacing
  • End-of-tenancy damage — one or two chips → chip repair
  • Cast iron or steel bath in generally poor condition → resurfacing is likely the better investment

Cost Comparison

Bath chip repair typically costs significantly less than full resurfacing. Resurfacing involves much more labour, preparation and material and takes a full day; chip repair can be done in an hour or two. For localised damage, chip repair provides a better return on investment.
