Vinyl Wrapping vs Surface Repair for Kitchen Units: Which Is Right for You?

If your kitchen units are damaged, worn or simply looking tired, you’ve likely come across two options: vinyl wrapping (also called cabinet wrapping or door wrapping) and surface repair. Both can transform the look of your kitchen without full replacement — but they work very differently and suit different situations.

What Is Kitchen Vinyl Wrapping?

Vinyl wrapping involves applying a self-adhesive vinyl film over existing cabinet doors and drawer fronts, changing their colour and finish. High-quality vinyl wraps can replicate wood grain, gloss finishes, matte colours and even textured surfaces convincingly. It’s essentially a full colour change for your kitchen doors.

What Is Kitchen Surface Repair?

Surface repair targets specific damage — a chip in a cabinet door, a scratch on the carcass, a burn on a worktop, or delamination of a door edge. Rather than covering the whole door, a technician repairs the damaged area so it matches the surrounding surface invisibly.

When to Choose Vinyl Wrapping

  • You want to change the colour of your kitchen entirely
  • Doors are in good overall condition but the colour or finish is dated
  • You want a cosmetic refresh across all units
  • Budget doesn’t stretch to full replacement but you want a new look

When to Choose Surface Repair

  • You have localised damage — a chip, scratch, crack or burn — on one or a few doors
  • You’re happy with the existing kitchen colour and just want the damage fixed
  • You’re a landlord needing to fix damage between tenancies
  • You need to pass an end-of-tenancy inspection
  • The worktop or carcass (rather than just the door) is damaged

What About Spray Painting Kitchens?

A third option — spray painting — involves in-situ painting of existing kitchen units using specialist paints. This is similar to wrapping in that it changes the overall colour, but uses paint rather than film. Spray painting is generally suitable for kitchens where the doors are undamaged but the colour needs updating. See our guide to what hard surface repair involves for more detail.
