Quartz worktops are marketed as virtually indestructible — and they’re certainly among the toughest kitchen surfaces available. But “scratch resistant” isn’t the same as “scratch proof,” and quartz worktops do get scratched, particularly from abrasive cleaning products, ceramic knives or gritty material being dragged across the surface. Here’s what’s fixable and how to go about it.

Types of Quartz Surface Damage

  • Fine surface scratches — very light scratches to the polished surface, often more visible in raking light. These can sometimes be polished out with a specialist quartz polish and a microfibre cloth.
  • Deeper scratches — scratches that have removed material from the surface require professional filling and refinishing to restore properly.
  • Chips to edges and corners — the most common quartz damage. Edge chips are repairable using colour-matched resin, polished to match the quartz’s surface finish.
  • Scorch marks — quartz can be heat damaged by hot pans; scorch marks are repairable in most cases.

Why DIY Doesn’t Work on Quartz

Quartz is an engineered stone — a mix of crushed quartz, resins and pigments — and repairing it properly requires colour-matched resin systems that mimic the stone’s colour, pattern and finish. Unlike laminate or wood, you can’t sand quartz back. DIY repair kits don’t come close to matching the colour, texture and surface finish of manufactured quartz — the repair will be visible. On an expensive quartz worktop, a badly done DIY repair looks significantly worse than the original scratch.

How Professional Quartz Scratch and Chip Repair Works

An experienced surface repair technician will assess the damage, select and mix a colour-matched resin system, apply it to the scratched or chipped area in layers, then diamond polish the repair to match the surrounding surface finish. On polished quartz this means achieving the same high sheen; on honed or matte quartz, matching the lower reflectivity level.

The result, on a quality repair, is very difficult to detect — even on quartz with complex colour movement and veining.

How Much Does Quartz Scratch and Chip Repair Cost?

  • Edge or corner chip repair — a competitive pricea competitive price
  • Surface scratch repair (localised) — a competitive pricea competitive price
  • Scorch mark repair — a competitive pricea competitive price

Compare that with quartz worktop replacement: even a modest quartz worktop, including templating, fabrication and fitting, typically costs a competitive pricea competitive price depending on the stone and the run length. Repair is an obvious financial win for any localised damage.
